Out of our four cornerstones, positivity might seem a bit fluffy. As an Eastern Idaho farm kid, I get that. But after nearly 30 years in education, I’ve learned how much positivity truly matters.

When we approach challenges, and even mistakes, with a positive mindset, we learn to see them as opportunities for learning and growth. As we do that, we build our confidence that “we can do this.” In 2018, researchers Cansoy and Parlar described this shared belief as "collective efficacy." They found that collective efficacy drives motivation and follow-through when the work gets hard. That mindset grows when adults and students intentionally encourage one another, learn together, and celebrate progress. Together, as families and educators work together with that mindset, we truly can design success for every student. Thank you for your support in that striving to achieve that vision.

Hillview Elementary Principal Elisa Saffle, Ucon Elementary Principal John Murdoch, and teachers Chantelle Jepson and Brianna Bird recently shared insights on the impact of full-day kindergarten, emphasizing both research and classroom experience.

Presenters noted that full-day programs provide students with stronger early literacy foundations, increased social-emotional development, and more time for intervention, enrichment, and play-based learning. Data from Idaho studies shows students in full-day kindergarten demonstrate greater academic growth, with particularly significant benefits for economically disadvantaged students, non-English speakers, and children needing additional support.

Teachers also reported that students leave kindergarten more confident, better prepared academically, and ready for the expectations of first grade. While some children may need a short adjustment period, educators consistently see students adapt quickly and thrive in the structured, supportive environment.

District leaders shared that full-day kindergarten directly supports the mission of preparing today’s learners for tomorrow’s success by ensuring every child has the time and foundation needed for a strong start.

High school students with an interest in civics, history, and public service are invited to participate in the Presidential 1776 Award, a new national civics scholarship competition created in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. From February through June 2026, students will compete in a multi-round challenge demonstrating their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, the American founding, and the principles that shaped our nation. After local and regional rounds, top students will advance to a national final in Washington, D.C., where three national winners will earn scholarships totaling $250,000. This exciting opportunity aligns well with U.S. government and history coursework and offers students a chance to be recognized on a national stage. Idaho Falls Family YMCA Spring Sports: Registration is open January 12 to March 7 (late registration March 9 to March 14 with a $15 fee). The season runs March 30 to May 23, with youth options like soccer, basketball, volleyball, and flag football (plus adult leagues). We’re excited to see continued investment in our community! The City of Ammon recently announced a $125,000 donation from Lookout Credit Union for new playground equipment at McCowin Park, including updated play structures, inclusive elements, safety surfacing, and swings.

McCowin Park has long been a great neighbor to Hillview Elementary, providing additional space for students and families to gather and play. These upgrades will make that space even better.

Come Join Steve in a 7-Week course of Parenting the Love and Logic Way. Steve Dewey has been teaching parenting classes in the community for the past 27 years. He is well known for his ability to use humor and fun stories to make his parenting classes easy to understand so that participants are able to implement the interventions immediately and successfully.
